Hamilton County Mother Receives Support for Her Children
Although
Child Support Awareness Month has come to an end, the HCJFS Child
Support unit works year-round to collect payments so parents can
raise their children. Thanks to precautionary measures and quick
action by the HCJFS Child Support unit, one Hamilton County mother
received a child support payment of $6,050.
The father had not made a
full monthly payment in two years so HCJFS implemented a lien.
A lien is attached to the
payer’s social security number. If a parent owing child support tries to
re-finance their home or sell a car, the lien shows up and they have to
pay their child support balance before continuing.
The lien was placed by
HCJFS on the father’s number in January. In June, he contacted Child
Support Enforcement Technician Tasha Parish because he wanted the lien
removed so he could re-finance his house.
“The re-finance wouldn’t
go through unless he settled the lien with us,” said Emily Jackson,
child support enforcement team leader.
Four days later, he made
a cash payment and the mother received the full $6,050 owed to her.
Liens are a precautionary
measure so it usually takes awhile for the lien to be recognized by the
paying parent. Liens take a lot of “behind the scenes action,” Jackson
said.
“It just happened to work
out,” Jackson said. “We placed it in January and he re-financed in five
months.”
The father is now making
full monthly payments and the mom has received all of the support money
owed to her.
